I’ve been thinking about this lately…

If I moved back to India today, I would be going back as a completely different person.

When I lived in India, I was a job person.

Study.
Get a good job.
Work hard.
Earn more.
Climb the ladder.

And there was absolutely nothing wrong with that.

But starting my own business?

That felt like something other people did.

Today, if you told me I had to move back to India tomorrow…

I genuinely believe I could start something of my own.

And that made me wonder…

What changed?

I’m still me.

Same education.
Same brain.
Same person.

But my relationship with risk changed.

My definition of security changed.

And most importantly…

My belief in my own ability to figure things out changed.

Moving countries forced me to start again.

It taught me that a job can disappear.
A plan can change.
Life can completely pivot.

And you can still rebuild.

I used to think security meant having a stable job.

Now I think security is knowing…

“Even if this doesn’t work out, I trust myself enough to build again.”

So maybe Canada didn’t make me an entrepreneur.

Maybe starting over simply showed me that I was capable of becoming one.

Nothing changed.

But somehow…

I was reading something recently that made me look at financial risk a little differently.

We hear this all the time — “The more money you have, the more risk you can afford to take.”

And technically… maybe.

But the article made a really interesting point:

Just because you CAN afford to take more risk doesn’t necessarily mean you SHOULD.

Because as your wealth grows, something else grows with it…

the amount you have to protect.

And honestly, this is something I come across so often in my work.

People are focused on growing their RRSPs, TFSAs, buying properties, investing, building businesses…

but sometimes we spend so much time talking about how to build wealth that we forget to talk about how to protect it.

And that’s where insurance becomes part of the wealth conversation…So as your income, assets and responsibilities grow, don’t only ask:

“How much more can I build?”

Ask:

“Have I protected what I’ve already built?”

There’s actually a name for the psychology behind it: the Sunk Cost Fallacy.
